I’m typing this with my face still hot. My coworker matched me on a random video chat, and I only found out halfway through.
She had a beanie and her camera was low-light, so I didn’t clock her at first. We did the normal playful back-and-forth, it was going great, honestly. Then she leaned forward, squinted, and said “wait a second. Do you work at the call center on Market Street?”
My blood ran cold. “Why?” I asked, like an idiot.
“Because I sit two cubicles away from you,” she said, and then she pulled her beanie off. It was Jenna. Jenna from the Monday morning meetings. We’d had exactly one conversation about the coffee machine.
We both stared at each other for the longest, most silent few seconds of my entire life. Then she burst out laughing and said “okay, this is the funniest thing that’s ever happened to me, and we are NEVER speaking of this again.” I agreed, mostly because I couldn’t find my voice.
She unmatched. I sat there for ten minutes just staring at my screen. Monday morning is going to be the most awkward coffee-machine trip of my life.
It’s funny how the riskiest moments on random chat aren’t the ones you plan, they’re the ones where someone recognizes you. And the last thing you expect on these sites is your own cubicle neighbor showing up on the other end.
